JiWire is an online company serving ads over public WIFI, and they have published their regular quarterly report generated from data they collect from devices receiving their ads. They have more than 30,000 WIFI locations and serve over 40 million unique users each month.
We last reported on them when they released their Q2 2011 report on the devices most used on their service. Now they are back with Q3 2011 data, which shows Windows Phones are used in 5% of interactions in US and 8% in UK. The more interesting statistic is that both numbers are roughly half of Android’s usage, despite Android handsets outnumbering Windows Phone handsets by about 1:40.
That suggests to me, like Symbian handsets which have huge installed base but are largely used to make phone calls, Android phones are not seeing much usage as smartphones, or at least for browsing the internet, compared to Windows Phones and iPhones, which are hugely overrepresented in the numbers due to very active use.
In that way Android phones would resemble Symbian or Blackberry phones of old, and Windows Phones, which are much more user friendly, being much closer to the iPhone in usage patterns.
The pattern likely also translate to app usage, which would be good news for developers, who would possible make more money from a more actively used if smaller platform.
